Quelle

The German mail order house Quelle Versandhaus was established in 1927. Quelle, is a German mail order company located in in Fuerth, Bavaria (where Henry Kissinger was born). I don't aware if Quelle was involved in export sales before World War II (1939-45). My guess it thar Quelle in the 1930s was primarily focused on the domestic market. This changed after the War and a considerable interest was palced on export maketing as well as foreign sourcing. A HBC reader reports that Quelle continues to be a very important mail order company. It also operates in France. A French reader reports that, "the articles sold in Germany are practically the same found in France. One of the older manufacturer is located in Orléan, France". There apparently were several different editions of theQuelle catalog. A French reader, for example, tells us that the catalog for French Guiana (also used in Guadeloupe and Martinique) didn'y have winter articles. Quelle still exsits and is quite an important one. Quelle in 1995 opened what they claimed was the world's most modern mail order house in Leipzig. Quelle incorporated as Quelle AG in 1997. Karstadt and Quelle merged in 1999 to form KarstadtQuelle AG.

German Tights

Tights appear to be more popular in German than in many other European countries. The full history of tights in Germany is not fully understood. German boys commonly wore long stockings in the winter, even after the 1910s when they generally went out of style in many other European countries. Younger boys in the inter-war years might even wear them with short pants. Tights may have also been worn during this period. After World War II (1939-45) some boys appeared to have begun wearing tights rather than long stockings, although HBC has little information on this. Some German boys continue to wear them in the 1990s. Even older boys might wear them during the winter for football (soccer) practice. There are a wide variety of tights availablr for boys in Germany in many different colors, patterns, and styles.

Garments

The Quelle Winter catlog for 1978-79 offered father and son tights in identical styles. They were done with a ribbed weave in six different colors royal and navy blue, tan, grey, bugandy, and black.. The material was Acryl Stretch. The ad copy read, "Strumpfhosen, wie Männer sie mögen! Arcyl Stretch vendecktem Schitz. Für Vater und Sohn. Sportilche Strumpfhose in preisünnstiger 2-Stück-Packung. Für Vater und Sohn! Per fekte Passform. strapazierfähig und angenehm zu tragen. Material: 60 % Polyacryl, 40% Poluamid." This translstes as, "Tights, the way men like them. For gentlemen. 28.00 2-piece package. Acryl stretch with covered fly. For father and son. Sporty tights in economical 2-piece package. Perfect fit. Rough- wearing and pleasant to wear." The mens sizes were 44-46, 48-50, 52, anf 54-56. I'm not sure, but I think this is probanu waist sizes. The boys' sizes were: 104-110, 116-128, 140-152, and 164. I'm not sure, but this may be height.
