German Mail Order Catalogs with Boys Clothings: The 1970s

German mail order catalogs offer a very useful time line on changing fashion trends. German mail order catalogs show a major shift in German boys' clothing in the 1970s. Boys no longer wore short pants as dress wear. Shorts were increasingly becoming casual wear. Colorful clothes were very popular in the 1970s. This catalog company in 1973 offered colorful shirts, ties, pants, and socks. Flare pants were popular as well as square-toed shoes. Polyester was also all the rage. We note a variety of colorful kneesocks were available. They even appeared for girls. Lederhosen and other folk styles appear to have been popular in the 1970s.

The Weserversand 1972-73 winter catalog offered tights for boys and girls. They appear to have been warm weather garments. Colors varied somewhat for boys and girls.

1973

Colorful clothes were very popular in the 1970s. This catalog company in 1973 offered colorful shirts, ties, pants, and socks (figure 1). Flare pants were popular as well as square-toed shoes. Polyester was also all the rage. We note a variety of colorful kneesocks were available. Square toe shoe styles were popular, some in two colors. Several company offered kneesocks in many different colors and patterns. Catalogs suggest that boys wore kneesocks with long pants.

The Neckermann catalog in 1977 offered Lederhosen.

1978

The Quelle Winter catlog for Winter 1978-79 offered father and son tights in identical styles. They were done with a ribbed weave in five different colors.

1979

The Quelle catalog offered a sporty jacket. One catalog in 1979 offered a variety of lederhosen for casual wear. The real lederhosen were available in several different styles made from leather. There were even denim shorts made to look like lederhosen. There were worn with brightly colored check and plaid shirts. The shorts were shown with one girl model. Lederhosen were a v=boy model, but hre were shown for girls as well.
