Switzerland is not a country known for bathing and beaches. Of corse there are all those beautiful lakes like Lake Geneva. I have never swam there, but I imagine it is rather a bracing experience. The Jelmoli catalog include bathing suits for boys or girls. There were one-piece suits for girls. They were two styles foe boys. Some were the suits that had attached tops. Other were suits consisting of just the trunks or pants.
We note a catalog form the Grand magasins Jelmoli. Grand magasins Jelmoli has for many years been the flagship department store chain of Switzerland. Johann Peter Jelmoli-Ciolina founded founded the store in 1838 by . Ciolina must have been the maiden name of his wife. He was from the Swiss-italian section of Switerland. The company has always been headquartered in Zurich where the flag-ship department store was opened. It opened branches throughout Switrzerland, but a few years back it sold or closed all its branches and only kept the large store in Zurich. I would say it was always an "up-scale" department store. The catalog-department was a very small part of their operations and the catalogs carried a very small amount of merchandise, compared to what was available in their stores. The catalog-department was added in 1899.
They were two styles foe boys. Some were the suits that had attached tops. Other were suits consisting of just the trunks or pants. The trunks were done in two different versions. Thevsuits were done in sizes from 4 to 14 years.
The ad copy read, "Reinwolliger Knaben-Badeanzug, sportliche Facon, marine oder boreauxrot.
Laenge 45 cm No. 384,62 Fr. 2.90 bis 62 cm 384,66 Fr. 3.90." This would fit boys from about 4 years to 12 or 14 years.
The ad copy read, "Reinwollene Badehose, gestrickt, mit Gummizug, marine oder boreauxrot, fure Knaben von 4 - 14 Jahren. No. 384,56, Fr. 2.50."
The ad copy read, "Flotte Badehose, gestrickt, aus reiner wolle, mit Reissverschlusstasche, marine oder bordeauxrot.. Fuer Knaben von 6 - 14 Jahre. No 384,57 Fr. 3.25."
