Jelmoli

We note a catalog form the Grand magasins Jelmoli. Grand magasins Jelmoli has for many years been the flagship department store chain of Switzerland. Johann Peter Jelmoli-Ciolina founded founded the store in 1838 by . Ciolina must have been the maiden name of his wife. He was from the Swiss-italian section of Switerland. The company has always been headquartered in Zurich where the flag-ship department store was opened. It opened branches throughout Switrzerland, but a few years back it sold or closed all its branches and only kept the large store in Zurich. I would say it was always an "up-scale" department store. The catalog-department was a very small part of their operations and the catalogs carried a very small amount of merchandise, compared to what was available in their stores. The catalog-department was added in 1899.

Sleepwear Types

The two basic styles of sleepwear were mightshirts and pajamas. They were equally prominent, suggesting that both were commonly worn. Interesting as popular as skiwear was in Switzerland, we do no note ski-style pajamas.

SleepWear Conventions

A Swiss reader writes, "As a kid growing up in a smakk village, I wore always a night-shirt over my underwear. I guess it was for warmth, as our bedrooms were not heated. I entered a boarding school in 1948, about the time of this catalog. At the boarding-school it was the first time I saw boys wearing pajamas. I would say we were a mixed group. Some of us had nightshirts while others, mostly the city boys had pajamas. I think in the country many boys slept in their underwear. I saw that in the military. Farmer-boys did not have night-clothing."

Sleepwear Items

There were two sleepwear items offered on the Jelmoli page with underwear.

Huebsches Knaben-Nachthemd

The nightshirt was white with coloredtrim. It hd a rugby front opening. The sizing was done by length. The ad copy read, "Huebsches Knaben-Nachthemd Aus kraefitgem, warmem Coise-Barchent In reiner Baumwolle Weiss mit farbige Garnitur.
