Figure 1.--Here are of sweaters and other garments offered for boys and girls in the Jelmoli Winter 1947 catalog. Jelmoli was a Zurich departmenmt store with a well-established catalog business. |
Sweaters as in all of northern Europe are popular garments for boys and girls. We note the tht the Jelmoli 1947 Winter catalog offered a wide range of sweaters for boys and girls. Most are long-sleeve pullovers. Some of the boys and girls sweaters are virtually identical. Others are different. Some of the boys' sweater have partial zips and one of the girls sweaters is a cardigan. One boys' sweater is a sleevless style.
We note a catalog form the Grand magasins Jelmoli. Grand magasins Jelmoli has for many years been the flagship department store chain of Switzerland. Johann Peter Jelmoli-Ciolina founded founded the store in 1838 by . Ciolina must have been the maiden name of his wife. He was from the Swiss-italian section of Switerland. The company has always been headquartered in Zurich where the flag-ship department store was opened. It opened branches throughout Switrzerland, but a few years back it sold or closed all its branches and only kept the large store in Zurich. I would say it was always an "up-scale" department store. The catalog-department was a very small part of their operations and the catalogs carried a very small amount of merchandise, compared to what was available in their stores. The catalog-department was added in 1899.

This another shirt-like sweater, I think with a zip partial front. The ad copy read, "Flotter Knaben-Pullover in schwerer Woll-Qualitaet, vorne mit Reissverschluss, beige N0. 3024,065, grau No. 3024,066. Laengen: 35 cm Fr 9.80, 40cm Fr.10.80,45cm Fr. 11.80, 50cm Fr.12.80, 55 cm Fr.13.80."
This sweater was done with a crew neck, but with a zip partial front opening. The ad copy read, "Warmer sportlicher Knaben-Wollpulloveer mit Rollkragen und Reissverschluss, in schmissiger Form. Grau No. 3024,067, beige No. 3024,068, Laengen: 40cm Fr.10.50, 45cm Fr.11.50, 50cm Fr.12.50, 55cm Fr.13.50, 60 cm Fr.14.50."
This was a sporty styled ski sweater, done with a crew neck. The ad copy read, "Rassiger Sportpulover in hervorragender Woll-Qualitaet mit Sternborte modern gemustert, wie ihn die Knaben gern tragen. Dunkelblau. No 3024,069, Laengen: 40cm 15.80, 45cm Fr.17.80, 50cm Fr.1980, 55cm Fr.21.80"
This sweater was a sleevless sweater with a "V" front. These were sweaters designed t be worn with ties. The fact that thre is only one offered suggests that they were not as popular as the long-sdleeve seaters. The ad copy read, "Vorteilhafter Knaben-Pullover aus reiner Wolle, mit huebschem Strickmuster. Grau No. 3024,072, braun No. 3024,073. Laengen 35 cm Fr.5.50, 40cm Fr.6.00, 45cm Fr.6,50, 50cm Fr.7.00."
