United States: Unknown Night Shirt (1869)

Figure 1.--Here we note a night shirt which were worn by children as well as adults. Pajamas were not yet available. The night shirt here was for a boy 14-16 years old. The pattern instructions suggested that linner be used. I'm unsure why they would have suggested linnen rather than cotton.

Here we note an illustration for a night shirt pattern. We do not yet know what company was marketing the patterns. Night shirts at the time were worn by children as well as adults. Pajamas were not yet available. We notice boys at the Holderness School wearing nighshirts in the 1880s. The night shirt here was for a boy 14-16 years old. The pattern instructions suggested that linner be used. I'm unsure why they would have suggested linnen rather than cotton. The pattern indicated that 2 1/2 yards of 36 inch material be used.
