Here we have a Ladies Home Journal illustration for younger boys' blouses. We do not have the ad copy, but believe the magazine is offering patterns for these blouses. The illustration shows three styles of boys' blouses in 1910. I suspect that these are patterns available for purchase rather than ready-made clothes since the The Lady's Home Journal was a magazine that catered for mothers who did a lot of sewing, cooking, and other household chores. All three boys wear the same style of bloomer knickers.

Ladies Home Journal

This interesting illustration of boys' clothing (a drawing rather than a photograph) showing three styles of boys' outfits in 1910. We suspect that these are patterns available for purchase rather than ready-made clothes since the ad appeared in The Lady's Home Journal, a magazine that catered for mothers who did a lot of sewing, cooking, and other household chores. The ad appeared in the October 15, 1910 issue.

Illustrator

This is a very high qulity illustration for a pattern advertisement. I'm not sure, however, who the illustrator was.

Blouse styles

The three styles have numbers--5226, 5643, and 5643.

5226

This boy wears a blouse with a rounded collar and bow tie with a ribbed sleeveless sweater over the blouse. He wears above-the-knee knickers and long stockings or some light shade--probably tan or light brown, and high button shoes. Light color stockings were a bit unusual as early as 1910 (black was the standard color), but younger boys sometimes wore white or tan stockings. These boys seem to be about six years old. Notice the unusual style cap with the brim turned down in front.

5643

This boy wears a blouse that opens down the front but that apparently has its front buttons concealed under a pleat. He wears a soft rounded attached collar with a very short straight tie. His above-the-knee knickers are the same as those of the other boys. He also wears light-colored long stockings but lace-up high boots rather than boots that close by buttons. Notice the wide-brimmed straw hat.

6543

This boy wears a blouse with a fancy large collar with a ruffled edge and buttons that go only part way down his chest. This collar seems to have suggestions of a Fauntleroy suit, although the rest of the outfit is a bit too informal for that. Notice the breast pocket. Instead of long stockings this boy wears ankle socks with a checked pattern just above the ankle. He also wears dressy ankle-strap shoes rather than boots. Only very young children wore ankle socks in 1910. Bare legs were considered inappropriate for any boy older than about 8.

Conventions

The illustrations are useful in establishing period clothing convdntions. We suspect that the boy on the right is wearing a blouse that was seen a more dressy or formal than the other two boys. This may explain why he is depicted in strap shoes. We're not sure aboit the socks rather than the log stockings. We have noted boys at the time wearing long tockings for ormal occassions.
