Wards's Wash Suits: Russian Blouse Suit and Sailor Blouse Suit Outfits, 1914


Figure 1.-- Here we see two little boy wash suits offered by Wards in their Summer 1914 catalog. The outfit on the left is a sailor blouse suit. The outfit on the right is a tunic suit which Wards called a Russian blouse suit. Although the illustration shows the sailor blouse suit being worn by an older boy, the actual sizing of the two outfits was very similar.

Wards in its Summer 1914 catalog offered several styles of wash suits. Mist were Russian blouse suits. There were also Sailor blouse suits and French blouse suits. Here are some of thise suits. The term suits are used because the top and bottom are of the same or cntrasting material.

Russian Blouses

Here are two of the styles of Russian blouses offered by Wards in 1914.

3W2042--Blue--Russian Blouse Suit

The Ward's ad copy read, "$2.45 Child's Russian Blouse Suit. Made of very fine cotton Repp, fast color wash fabric. Has large revere coolar to matc, with scalloped embroidered edge and insertion; removable white shield, embroidered. Sizes 2 1/2 to 7 years." This was a rather expensive suit.

3W2044--White--Russian Blouse Suit

This suit is the same as the above only done in white instrad of blue.

Sailor Blouse Suit

Here we see one of the sailor blouse suits offered by Wards in the Summer 1914 catalog.

3W2022--Blue Stripe: Double-breasted sailor blouse suit

The Wards ad copy read, "98c Child's Double-breasted Sailor Blouse Suit. Very heavy, guaranteed fast color Gingham. Two shades blue with white stripes, or brown with white tripes. Hs collar of the same, trimmed with strip of contrasting brown or blue and white braid. Has white, removable shield with embroidered front, and bloomer breeches. Sizes 3 to 8 years. Cut very full and roomy." Note the removable shield or dickey. Wards does not explain hust how they attached. Also knote the oants are referred to as bloomer breeches and not knickers.

3W2024--Brown Stripe: Double-breasted sailor blouse suit

Same as the above, but done in brown.
