Montgomey Ward Headwear: Fedora Hats (Fall-Winter, 1940-41)


Figure 1.-- I am not entirely sure what to call these hats and Wards offers no real clues, other than a reference to the material--felts. I think that this would we called a fedora, but without the center crease normally associated with fedoras. Perhaps a HBC reader will have more knowledge on this. Instead of the center crease, the hats here have a "C" crown (a rounded indentation for the head at the top of the crown).

I am not entirely sure what to call these hats and Wards offers no real clues, other than a reference to the material--felts. I think that this would we called a fedora, but without the center crease normally associated with fedoras. Perhaps a HBC reader will have more knowledge on this. Instead of the center crease, the hats here have a "C" crown (a rounded indentation for the head at the top of the crown). This hat as an adult look, but we do notice boys in the 1940s and 50s wearing them. It was a dress style, normally worn with a suit. A boy would not have worn this, for example, to go to school. We notice three different styles.

Smart Plain Edge

The Wards ad copy read, "Smart Plain Edge. Economy Priced Wool Felt 89 cents. Snappy proprotioned front pinch crown, permanently creased. 2-inch brim. Knit braid hatband. Unlined. Leather sweatband. Sizes: 6 3/8, 6 1/2, 6 5/8, 6 /3/4, 6 7/8, 7, 7 1/8. State stize Ship. wt. 1 lb. 13 oz. 535 B 8500--Medium Gray. 535 B 8501--Medium Brown. 535 B 8502--Navy blue. 535 B 8503--Medium Green. 89 cents."

Wool felt Mixtures

The Wards ad copy read, "Wool felt Mixtures $1.19 New Telescope Crown Style. The style young fellows are wearing. Premanently creased, all ready to go places. Welt edge helps the 2 1/2 inch brim hold its shape. Unlined. Leather sweatband. Ribbed hatband. Sizes: 6 3/8. 6 1/2, 6 5/8, 6 3/4, 6 7/8, 7, 7 1/8. State size. Ship. wt. 1 lbs. 13 oz. 435 B 8505--Medium Brown Mixture. 535 B 8506--Medium blue mixture. 535 B 8507--Medium Green Mixture. $1.19."

Best Quality Wool Felts

The Wards ad copy read, "Best Quality Wool Felts. $1.39. New Narrow Puggree Hatband. The pinch front crown is permanently creased to hold it shape. Rayon lining. 2 1/8-inch brim, welt edge. Leather sweatband. Sizes: 6 3/4, 6 1/2, 6 5/8, 6 3/4, 6 7/8, 7, 7 1/8. 535 B 8510--Medium Gray. 535 B 8511--Medium Brown. 535 B 8512--Medium Blue. Each $1.39."
