Montgomey Ward Headwear: Flat/Dress Caps (Fall-Winter, 1940-41)


Figure 1.-- Flat caps were a very popular cap in the 1930s, but a cap rapidly going out of style in 1940. We do not seem them being wdely worn in the 1940s. Wards still offered this style in 1940. Wards does not use the term "flat" cap, infact they provide no real description for these capa at all. The third style is called a "dress" cap. That is not, however, a useful description other than it provides an indication of how the caps were worn. It is not particularly useful because many styles have been used for dress caps and the styles have changed over time. In addition the photogrphic record sows these caps being worn for other than dress occassions.

See How to measure at right. 35 B 9025--Assorted Grays. 35 B 9026--Assorted Browns. 35 B 9027--Assorted Blues. 35 B 9028--Assorted Green. Each 75 cents."

Good Quality Caps

The Wards ad copy read, "Good Quality Caps 47 cents. 1/5 to 2/3 Soft Wool Cassimeres. Soft Cotton fleece earlaps give the protection needed for snappy weather. Long-wearing fabrics, with Rayon Herringbone lining and unbreakable canvas visor. Caps like these usually sell for a lot more! Sizes: 6 3/8, 6 1/2, 6 5/8, 6 3/4, 6 7/8, 7, 7 1/8. State Size. See How to measure at right. Ship. wt. each 14 oz. 35 B 9015--Assorted Grays. 35 B 9016--Assorted Browns. Each 47 cents."

Regular Dress Caps

The Wards ad copy read, "Regular Dress Caps. 75 cents. Adjustable 7 Size Larger or Smaller. No worry about your boy outgrowing these caps--they're adjustable! Made with sturdy Rayon lining, unbreakable visor. Frontpiece is of good quality leather. Sizes: 6 3/8, 6 1/2, 6 5/8, 6 3/4, 6 7/8, 7, 7 1/8. Be sure to state exact size. See How to measure at right. Ship. wt. 23 oz. 35 B 9020--Assorted Grays. 35 B 9021--Assorted Browns. 35 B 9022--Assorted Blues. Each 75 cents.
