Wards offered three types of suspenders, offered in various colors. These were clasps suspenders not requiring buttons to hold up shorts, slacks, skirts, and leggings. They were for children up to age 10 years. The illustration suggests they were for boys and girls, although I suspect they were more commonly worn by boys.
Suspenders were popular for younger children because belts
tended to be ineffective if boys and girls' hips were narrow. The
clip-on style of suspenders was favored by mothers because they
required no buttons to be sewn on to shorts or trousers, buttons that
might have had a tendency to come off. Many boys wore suspenders
instead of belts with both short and long trousers during the 1940s and
1950s.
The Wards ad copy read, " ... Just Clasp. For Shorts, Slacks, Skirts, Leggings. 9 cents. Fits to 10 years. No buttons. Colors: Blue or Maroon. Ship. wt. 3 oz." They were done in two withs.
