A popular style of casual short pants for boys in 1961 were play and camp shorts. The page from the Sears 1961 ummer catalog is headed, "Summer is shorts time." The shorts were made in sizes from 4 to 18, but in husky sizes to 22. The colors were charcoal grey, khaki, navy, and olive. The material was cotton twill. A slightly higer priced grade was sanforized. The ad copy emphasized the sturdy construction.

Sears

Sears was the leading chain depoartment store in 1961. They also operated a major mail order catalog.

Popular Style

Types

The ad copy was headed, "Sturdy cotton Camp and Play Shorts". Sears offered camp shorts in two different grades, the better quality shorts were a heavier fabric. Both were Sanforized.

Sturdy 8.2 oz. cotton twill

The ad copy read, "Sturdy 8.2 oz. cotton twill in complete size range for perfect fit. Two huge bellows-type pockets .. one with secret zip coin-pocket. Self belt. Metal accessory loop. Sanforized. Machine wash, medium. The shorts were available in three cuts: slim, regular, and husky. Slim and regular were done in size 4 to 18 and cost $2.44. The husky size was done in even sizes 6 to 22 and cost $2.84. All cuts were avalable in khaki and charcoal gray. Regular was also available in navy.

11 1/2 oz. cotton bull denim

The ad copy read, "11 1/2 oz. cotton bull denim. Our heaviest camping shorts. Can take rough wear .. they are strongly reinforced at all points of strain. Sanforized ® for lasting fit, mercerized for added strength and luster, self-built, two povckets (one bellows, one zipper slash). Metal accessory loop. Machine wadshable, medium temperature." they were available in sizes 4-16 in navy vand olive. They were priced at $2.94.

Sanforization

Sanforized is a trademark used for a patented mechanical process of preshrinking fabrics to minimize shrinkage when garments are washed. The Sanfordization process was developed in the 1950s. It is a mechanical treatment without and does not involve chemicals. The name of the trademark name, Sanforized, comes from from the first name of the inventor of the compressive shrinkage process,. Sanford L. Cluett. The sole owner of the registered trade mark which is The Sanforized Company, a division of Cluett Peabody & Co., in New York. Sanforized means that fabrics thus labeled are tested according to required tests developed by the Saforized Company. The company claims that Sanforized garments will not shrink more than 1 percent, either the warp or weft.
