We continue to see junior Eton suits being offered for younger boys in the major catalogs on sizes up to 6 years. This has been a popular style since the 1920s and is still seen today. And we do see them in the photographic record. The Sears Fall and Winter 1968 offered Eton suits with plaid jackets for boys 2-6x years of age. Age 6 years was when chidren began first grade, but we do not see boys wearin these suits or short pants very commonly to school. Knee socks were common, but on for the girls. They wee worn with turtes necks rather than blouses which were more common. They were offered with both short and long pants. But as long pant were becoming more common even for younger boys. Many American mothers peferred long pants for fall and summer wear. Here mothers were given choice. The shorts were shown worn with knee socks. They were the cable knit type of knee socks withoutbthe turn-over-top cuff. There were coordinated outfits for girls done in both skirts and jumpers. And there was even a matching neret/tam shown for the girls.

Sears Plaid Outfits

Here we see a Sears Fall and Winter 1968 page. Itwas headlined, "PLAID even more imprtant in our new country colors." The plaid outfits are dome in Fall brown colors--what Sears calls country colors. Wesee coorfinated outfits for younger boys and girls. .

1 and 2. Her cardinans and skirts

The cardigans and skirts match the boys' suit and girls skirt with colors and pliad patterns.

3. Their Stretch knee socks

The cable link knee socks were offered for boys and girls. Eton suits were still widely worn in 1968, but mostkyby girls. Some younger boys wore knee socls, but not commonly. Grks of all ages wore them, but only younger boys. Wevalmost never see boys wearing short oants and knee socks to school in the school prtraits, even the 1st graders. Many girls on the chool portraits wore them. The ad copy read, "Their stretcg Knee Socks are Orlon© acrylic and nylon. Machine wash. medium sizes. Sizes M (5½-6½), L (7-8½). State size M or L." The colors are acorn brown, Frist beuge, Tally Ho red, and Admiralty navy. 3 prs $2.28. Pr. 79c.

4. His two-piece Suit

The Sears Fall and Winter 1968 offered Eton suits with plaid jackets for boys 2-6x years of age. Age 6 years was when chidren began first grade, but we do not see boys wearin these suits or short pants very commonly to school. Knee socks were common, but on for the girls. They wee worn withbturtesnecks rather than blouses which were more common. The suit was offered with both short and long pants. Earlier they were only done with shorts panrs, butbaslong pantswere becoming morevcommin even for younger boys. Earlier they were only done with shorts pants even for fall-wintter wear. Here mothers were given choice. The shorts were shown worn with knee socks. And are feattured more prominently. We are not sure what that mans. We suspect that Sears believed that the shorts would sell better than the longs. They were the cable knit type of knee socks withoutbthe turn-over-top cuff. There were coordinated outfits for girls done in both skirts and jumpers. And there was even a matching neret/tam shown for the girls. The ad copy read, "His teo-piece Suit in plannel of wool and nylon. Acetate lined jacket has setbin sleeves, shoulder pads, interlined front facings. The pants - covered elastic back-waist, button front, zip fly, back pocket. Country Cplors plaid with acorn brown pants. Turtle-neck pullovrr not included, see oage 20. Suit with short pants. State size 2,3,4,5, 6, 6x. Suit $11.99. Suit with long pants. State size 2,3,4,5, 6, 6x. Suit $13.99.

5. Her beret

Sears call this headwear a beret. Given the size abd pom, we think tam i a bettervescription.ucen

6. Her A-line jumper

A-line refers to the shae of the dress, like theletter A. We are not entirely sure just what a jumper is in American English. We beliece it s essetially a dress wuthout a collar or sleeves worn over a blouse. In Brutain it is variously a gym slop or pinafore dress. Gym slips are a common British school uniform style. Jumper can also mean sweater.

7. Her classic blouse

Boys commonly wore Eton suits with Eton or Peter Pan collars. Here the boys are wearing turtle-neckpullovers. The girls are wearing blouses here with wde, rounded Peter Pan collar. The ad copy read, "Her PERMA-PREST© Classic Blouse needs no iroming when machine washed, medium tumbke dried. Fortrel** polyester and cotton, broadcloth. Button front. Frost beige. State size 3,4, 5, 6, 6x." $2.99.
