Sears

Sears was the leading American chain department store in 1973. They also operated the latrgest mail order catalog. Sears dominance in American retailing was in the 1970s declining. The increasing popularity of malls an botique shops was a major factor.

Garments

Sears in its Summer 1973 catalog offered a variety of little boys' (2/3-6x) playwear. The garments included shirts, short and long pants, hooded sweatshirts, and crew socks. There were both solid colors, stripes, and patterns.

Henley shirts

I'm not sure just what Henley shorts were, but they had no collar and Rudby-style pafrtial buttons. They were done in a kind of tattersall pattern.

PERMA-PREST® shorts

These solid colors shorts had ealsticised waistes with a zip fly.

Polo shirts

Hooded sweatshirts


Flare-leg jeans

These fakre denim jeans wee done in stripes. The jeans fofr the older boys were all done in solid colors.

PERMA-PREST® boxer shorts

These were basic boxer shorts without flys, done in solid colors and stripes. The Sears ad copy for the striped boxers read, "???." The Sears ad copy for the solid color boxers read, "Crisp poplin of polyester and cotton. All around elastic waist for comfort and good fit. Reinforced seams for added strength. Package of 3 solid colors: 1 blue, 1 h\green, 1 navy. Machine was at warm temperture then tumble dry .. no ironing." These were available in sizes 2-6x. The price was 2.99.

Crew socks

These stretch nylon crew socks were done in white and in colors. The Sears ad copy read, "Knit of 100% stretch nylon for neat fit and extra long wear. Rib knit tops cling smoothly to little ankles. SANI*GUARD® stocks reach you hygenically fresh." The colored sicks were blue, brown, green, navy, and red to match the other play clothes seen here."
