English Children's Literature: School Theme--Formula Approach

Figure 1.--As you can see the title is Expelled and it's one of a series of school storied from the publisher Jmaes Nisbet & Co Ltd. In this particular series, all the books have blue covers and they all depict the same schoolboy reading the same book. Notice the cap.

The English school books varied greatly in quality. Some were very well written with original plots. Other were formalistic approaches and rather hacnayed books. Some were beautifully illustrated Others had no illustrations at all. we note some books had the exact same cover, with only the title canged. The same cover illustration was used. That is an indication as to just what a low budget prodution some of these books were. A HBC reader writes, "I thought you may like to see this unusual bookcover. As you can see the title is Expelled and it's one of a series of school storied from the publisher Jmaes Nisbet & Co Ltd. The author was B. Heldman. In this particular series, all the books have blue covers and they all depict the same schoolboy reading the same book. There is no publisher's date in the book, although there is an inscription dated "Dec 16th 1906" at the front of the book. It is a typical school story. There is no decription of clothing in the text." There were no illustrations in these books, only the cover illustration which was used on several books.
