American Children's Literature: Illustration Chronology--The 1920s

Figure 1.-- This is one of Josephine Lawrence's childrens books, 'Kiddies in the Cohntry'. It is about city children going to live in the country. The cover illustration for some reason shows 19th century styles, but the images inside are more contemporary. y

American author Josephine Lawrence (1890?-1978) began her literary career as a children's author, writing more than 30 short books for juvenile readers with a limited vocabulary. Most of these books were published in the 1920s helping children learning how to read. They were richly illustrated, although we do not know who the illustrator was. Clara Burd illustrated most of her books. We are not syre about the book here. She would then write adult novels. She also worked as a journalist. Here we see a cover of one of her books, Kiddies in the Country (figure 1). Thee were series including Betty Gordon, Honey Bunch, Sunny boy " and the Riddle Club. Her stories were the first read for children over the radio.
