Fashion Publications and Children's Fashions: Australian Publications

Figure 1.--Paton's was a knitting magazine in Australia and it also had a sister publication but I have to get more information on the second magazine. Magazine may not be the best description. Their publications are little books or pamflets. The cover suggets patterns for suits, but I am not possitive about this.

We have little information on Australia. In the earlier years, mothers simply circulated publications grom England and other European countries. I'm not sure what the first domestically published womwen's and fashion magazines were. Several magazines have been of some importance in the 20th century. We note the Australian Women's Weekly Handmade and Paton which are knittng and sewing magazines. I believe that Villwool is another knitting magazine. An Australian reader also mentions Home And Family Journal which sometimes had information on children's clothes. An important fashion magazine was the Australian Womans Mirror. Material on clothing and fashion were also found in the Australian Post and The Bulletin. In recent years seeing how celeberties dress, as shown in People Magazine, has had an impact on fashion.

Patons and Baldwins' Specialty Knitting Book

Paton's was a knitting magazine in Australia and it also had a sister publication but I have to get more information on the second magazine. Magazine may not be the best description. Their publications are little books or pamflets. They are numbered, but not dated. The first magazine featured wool patterns or knitting diagrams for mothers who wanted to knit interesting jumpers, pullovers, vests (waistcoats), cardigans, and other garments. Wenote these patterns in the1950s, but are not positive just hen Paton was published. These patterns often included intricate designs that sometimes appealed to the children and always appeled to mums and grandmothers. An Australian reader comments on the illustrations for the knitted garments, "Boys usually had their hair cut short back and sides with or with out oil or Breelcream, combed up cowlick or parted or combed back like an early Elvis style. Often the magzine had photogrphs from a picnic, school, church outing or in the garden (back yard) at play or at the zoo. Boys were normally dressed in many types of shorts or trousers. There were patterns for knitted shorts for the youngr boys, but most of the batters were for jumpe (sweaters)."

Villwool

I believe that Villwool is another knitting magazine.

Pople's Magazine,
