Crown Prince Rupprecht's Son Luitpold: Clothing--Light-colored Satin Knickers Suit

Figure 1.--Luitpold's light-colored kbickers suit was made in the button-on style. We are not sure what color it was, perhaps a light blue.

The light-colored knickers suit looks very similar to his kneepants suit. They are clearly made in satin. There may have only been one of these light-colored knickers suits. The jacket is made with an open collar and has large satin-covered buttons. The outfit had the same lace collars and matching wrist trim that he wore with the kneepants suits. Some of the knickers suits, like the kneepants suit were done in the button-on style. We did not notice at first that hechad begin wearing his light-colored suits with knickers, but enlargements of available images confirm this. This is difficult to follow because not all the portraits were taken full length, so we sometimes do not know the type of pants that he was wearin. There may have been only one suit. We do not think that this suit was white or even cream. It may have been a light blue, but we can not be sure with the available black and white image. He looks to have been about 11 years old when he wore this suit, probably in 1912.

Similar to Kneepants Suits

The light-colored knickers suit looks very similar to his kneepants suit. They are clearly made in satin. There may have only been one of these light-colored knickers suits.

Jacket

The jacket is made with an open collar and has large satin-covered buttons. The styling of the jackets are not always easy to make out because of the lace collars which cober the meck openings. Some of the jackets or tops of the outfits appaer to be rather simple garments without satin fabric collars and lapels. Some of the jaclets clearly had lapels and the lace collars were acrefully cut to precisely fit over them. We do not see Luitpold and his brother wearing these satin jackets without the lace collars.

Lace Trim

The outfit had the same lace collars and matching wrist trim that he wore with the kneepants suits. Notice that the lace collar crosses over rather than meeting.

Pants

Some of the knickers suits, like the kneepants suit were done in the button-on style. We did not notice at first that hechad begin wearing his light-colored suits with knickers, but enlargements of available images confirm this. This is difficult to follow because not all the portraits were taken full length, so we sometimes do not know the type of pants that he was wearin.

Color

We do not think that this suit was white or even cream. It may have been a light blue, but we can not be sure with the available black and white image.

Figure 2.--The pants were clearly knickers and not kneepants.

Age

Luitpold looks to have been about 11 years old when he wore this suit, probably in 1912.

Hair Style

We note that Luitpld wears his hair cut short with these kniclers suits. He may have had his hair cut at the same tome that his kneepants were replaced with knickers.
