These English primary school children are taking a school trip to London, we believe in 1961. A lot of satchels, duffle bags vanity cases etc. can be seen. Notice some of the boys are wearing school caps. Several of the boys are wearing suits. Click on the image for a fuller discussion of this school group.
These English primary school children seem to be taking a school trip to London. A British leader confirms to us that it is definitely London. He tells us, "I think the photograph was take near the army barracks at the corner of St James Park. It is around the corner from Buckingham Palace."
We believe that this is a school photograph from the 1960-61 school year, but are not positive. Almost surely it is the early 1960s. The trees in the background suggest February or March 1961.
A British readr tells us, "There is something big taking place because of all the flags in the background and the item of decoration shown. This makes me think that the children are not down in the capital to visit a Museum. There is a big pageant taking place and they are down for that. What could the pageant be? 1) It looks later than 1953. 2) It rained on the day of the Coronation so I rule out the Coronation. The photograph has an early 1960s feel to
it. The next ceremony of note could be the Wedding of Princess Margaret to Lord Snowden that occurred about 1961. I think that may be why the children are in London." HBC seens some French flags. I wonder if General DeGualle is paying a visit.
A lot of satchels, duffle bags vanity cases etc. can be seen. The boys looks to us like they are wearing a uniform, although somewhat varied. Sime boys wear overcots and othrer suits. Notice some of the boys are wearing school caps. The caps, however, do not look to be required. Strangely the girld do not seem to be wearing unifoms, but rather dresses. One girl. however looks to be wearing a blazer and tie.
