English School Uniform: Cord Shorts at Prep and Primary Schools

Figure 1.--Most boarding schools restrict television view, except for the news. Thus the weekend video these boys are enjoying is a real treat. Click on the image for a comment by a HBC reader.

A HBC reader writes, "It seems to be optional at this prep school if the boys wore shoes (black like my school shoes) or sandals (brown - again like my school). The school uniform also seems to be cord shorts rather than the more normal flannel or Terelyn . I expect that some prep schools were more strict about this. I find it interesting that some prep schools had cord shorts. I rather thought they were more formal about uniform matters. As a boy in the 1960s, I liked cords and often wore tham for play. They were not allowed, however, at my primary school. Sort of interesting that my little Anglican primary was more formal than a prep school. I am sure that that is connected to it being a day school and so we could change out of them at home. At boarding schools where boys stayed in uniform all day would no doubt find the more hard-wearing cords more suitable as an option. My Mum liked cords for that very reason - although my brother hated wearing them just as I hated the cotton type shorts that he preferred. So we had to take turns when Mum wanted us dressed similarly. Cords are of course warmer too, but I preferred them both in Summer and Winter and would happily have worn a grey pair to school if allowed. "
