English Primary Schools: School Uniform Chronology--The 1950s

Figure 1.--This English school photograph is unidentified and undated. Color school photographs are relatively rare from the 1950s. The rather long shorts worn by the boys, however, suggest to us that this photograph was taken in the 1950s.

English primary schools generally did not have uniforms until recently. Girls normally wore dresses. Some boys still wore suit jackets or blazrers in the 1950s although it was becoming less common at schools thast did not require uniforms (figure 1). The boys wore a variety of shorts. Knee-length shorts were still quite common. Many of the new primary schools began instituting simple uniforms in the 1950s. This became more and more coimmon as the decade progressed. The uniforms adopted were normally bassic. Simple jumpetrs or dresses were common for the girls. The boys wore seeaters, collared shirts, and grey shorts. Many schools required ties. Sandals were very common.
