Lycee Jacques Decośr: Clothing (1946-47)

Figure 1.-- There are several interesting observations here. There does not seem to be any discenable school rule about clothing. Only two boys wear smocks. I thought smocks were more popular at the time. Both boys wear the same front-buttoning styles, but in different colors. I'm not sure how to interpret this. It looks like that unless the school encouraged it, few French mothers sent their boys to school in smocks. Or perhps smocks declined in popularity during the War. Perhaps our French readers will have some insights here. Click on the image to see the rest of the class.

There are several interesting observations here. There does not seem to be any discenable school rule about clothing. Several boys wear suits. The double-breasted style seems popular. Even more boys wear sweaters, both sleeveless and long-sleeved sweaters. We notice a range of shirts. Some boys wear ties. Some boys have buttoned their collar buttons. Other wear their shirts in an open neck style. Almost all of the boys wear short pants. I think this is because shorts were so commonly worn in France and not because of any school rule. Only a few boys wear kneesocks. Some boys have rolld his kneesocks down. Several boys wear suits, although some without ties. Only two boys wear smocks, both front-buttoning styles. I'm not sure how to interpret this. It looks like that unless the school encouraged it, few French mothers sent their boys to school in smocks. Or perhps smocks declined in popularity during the War. Perhps our French readers will have some insights here. Most of the boys wear sandals rather than shoes. T-strap sandals seemed especially popular. One boy wears escadrilles, a kind of canvas shoe.

School Rules

There does not seem to be any discenable school rule about clothing. Th boys wear a widerange of different outfits.

Garments

There are several interesting observations here about the various garments that the boys are wearing.

Suits

Several boys wear suits. The double-breasted style seems popular.

Sweaters

Even more boys wear sweaters, both sleeveless and long-sleeved sweaters.

Shirts

We notice a range of shirts. Some boys wear ties. Some boys have buttoned their collar buttons. Other wear their shirts in an open neck style.

Pants

Almost all of the boys wear short pants. I think this is because shorts were so commonly worn in France and not because of any school rule.

Smocks

Many French school childeen until the 1960s wore school snocks. Smocks especially at this age were commonly worn at some French schools. This was not the case at this school. Only two boys here wear smocks. I thought smocks were more popular at the time. Both boys wear the same front-buttoning styles, but in different colors. I'm not sure how to interpret this. We have seen schools in the 1950s where large numbers of boys wore smocks. But this varied widely from school to school. It looks like that unless the school encouraged it, few French mothers sent their boys to school in smocks. Or perhps smocks declined in popularity during the War. Perhaps our French readers will have some insights here.

Hosiery

Only a few boys wear kneesocks. Some boys have rolled their kneesocks down. Several boys seem to be wearing ankle socks.

Footwear

Most of the boys wear sandals rather than shoes. T-strap sandals seemed especially popular. One boy wears escadrilles, a kind of canvas shoe. I think the footwear here suggests tht these children came from affluent families. Almost all of the children wear leather shoes or leather sandals, especially English-style school sandals. Given conditions immediately after the War, we that many French childen would not have had such high-qiality footwear at the time.
