New Zealand School Uniform: Seasonality--Climate

Figure 1.--This is the Winter uniform at an Aucklanf highschool. This might not look very wintery to American readers. It never gets really cold in uckland, but there are chilly days during the Winter.

New Zealand is the southernmost of the South Pacific Islands. It is, however a country composed of two islands located north and south of each other and thus called North and South Island. New Zealand has a complex climatic regime. The climate is essentially temperate, with substantial regional differences. Reflecting their names, the two islands are arrayed in a north/south line. South Island extends some distance south into the extreme south Pacific toward the Anartic Ocean. There are thus considerable climatic differences between the two islands. On the nortehrn part of North Island the climate is warm, almost sub-tropical. The south of South Island has a cool temperate climate. There are also mountaneous areas, especially on South Island with alpine conditions. The mountains running along the spine of New Zealand have a dramatic impact on the climate. They represent a barrier prevailing westerly winds. This has a dramatic impact on precipitation, especially on South Island. West of the mountains there is heavy precipitation. East of the mountains the precipitation is much more limited. On the southern part of South Island there is a highly temperate climate with glasiers and occasional snow in the winter. Temperatures average about 10°C in the south to 16°C in the north of New Zealand. The extreme temperature months of course are just the opposite of the United States, reflecting Neww Zealands southern location. The coldest month is normally July and the warmest month is normally usually January or sometimes February. The temperature variation between summer and winter is relatively small, somewhat more prounounced on South Island. These seasonal factors affect the uniforms adopted by the various schools on New zealand. Many New Zealand schools have seasonal uniforms to adjust to the climatic changes.
