Czechoslovakian Schoolwear: Garments

Figure 1.--This photogtraph at the Adršpach School was taken in 1950-51. It was a small village school. The barefoot children suggest that economic conditions were still difficult. Click on the image to see the rest of the school.

We have noticed Czech children wearing both uniforms and their own clothes over times. The uniforms we have noted are those implemented by the Communuist Government. The uniform was the Young Pioneer uniform as served both for school and for Pioneer activities. The uniform was a white shirt and blue pants or skirts worn with a red scarve (figure 1). These uniforms appear to have been worn in the 1960s-80s. Although during this period we note many photographs of the children not wearing their uniforms. We are not sure what the conventioins were. We also notice Czech children wearing their own clothes, providing a glimspe of popular styles over time. We note boys through the 1950s commonly wore short pants. We have noted many younger children wearing H-bar pants and skirts until the 70s went this went out of style. During the Winter, long syockings were very common for both boys and girls.

Pioneer Uniforms

We have noticed Czech children wearing both uniforms and their own clothes over times. The uniforms we have noted are those implemented by the Communuist Government. The uniform was the Young Pioneer uniform as served both for school and for Pioneer activities. The uniform was a white shirt and blue pants or skirts worn with a red scarve (figure 1). At one school boys only wore long parts as part of their uniform. We do not yet know if that was standard throughout the country. We do not note children wearing the Pioneer uniform in the 1950s. These uniforms appear to have been worn in the 1960s-80s. Although during this period we note many photographs of the children not wearing their uniforms. We are not sure what the conventioins were.

Shirts

Boys by the 1960s were mostly wearing collared shirts. The shirts through the early 50s often had the non-pointed collars seen here.

Sweaters

We note many Czech children wearing sweaters when the weather turns cold.

Pants

We also notice Czech children wearing their own clothes, providing a glimspe of popular styles over time. We note boys through the 1950s commonly wore short pants. We have noted many younger children wearing suspenders. The boys here mostly wear suspenders rather than suspender pants (figure 1). We have noted suspender pants and H-bar pants until the 70s went this went out of style.

Dresses

Girls mostly wore dresses or skirts to schools. Through the 1960s there were few exceptions. Suspender or U-bar skirts were popular for the girls. Through the early 50s some girls wore pinafores.

Hosiery

During the Winter, long stockings were very common for both boys and girls. We notice girls wearing long stockings through the 1960s.

Shoes

We note children still going barefoot to school in the early 50s. The school here was a rural village school. This was probably less common in the cities.
