Ukranian School Uniform: Activities

Figure 1.--This photograph was taken in Kiev, dyring the Soviet Union, probably about the mid-1970s. We know that it was taken before 1979 when the photographer immigrated to America. It was a recent photo at that time, taken, I should guess, about 1976. The children from a Kiev kindergarten (about five years old) are all dressed up for a New Year's party wearing party hats (bunny rabbit caps for the girls, a wizzard cap for the boy). Their mothers have dressed them in their very best dress-up clothes--white ruffled dresses for the girls, dark shorts and a white shirt or blouse for the boy. The girls wear long white stockings or white knee socks. The boy wears white long stockings that he seems a bit too big for because they are unusually short, so short that the clasps of his garters are exposed. For some reason he seems to be wiping away a tear.

We are just beginning to develop information on activities at Ukranian schools. We have limited information on activities in Ukranian schools. There of course are all the standard academic activities. We are less sure about the extent of extra-curicvular activities. We note images of the childdren involved in class skits and presentations. We also do not know how activities varied over time. Schools in the Ukraine and Russia were very similar durung the Soviet era. During the Soviet era there was the Young Pioneer program. There was also military training for the boys. I assume that no longer takes place, but am not sure at this time.
