Figure 1.--This photograph shows the boys at the Aberdare Boys Grammar School in 1957. The school had a uniform, but apparently thev older boys did not have to wear it. Note the boy at the left with the school cap.

The uniform in 1957 was essentually a black blazer without a badge and grey trousers. The school did not seem to strictly enforce the uniform frule as several boys do not wear ties and at least one boy wrars an outlandish shirt. The senior boys apparently were not required to war blazers. Some boys wear a grey sweater with school trim. Many boys , however, wear non-regulation "V"-nsck and crew-neck sweaters. Some of the younger boys wore short trousers and kneesocks. There do not appear to be regulation school kneesocks. Not all of them wore shorts, but I am not sure what the rule was. The school had a cap with concentric circles, but virtually none of the boys appear to have it, at least in the portrait. The only one we see is one of the younger boys who is wearing long trousers. At many grammar schools in the 1950s, the only boys required tom wear the caps were the younger boys still wearing short trousers. I'm unsure what the school rule was for the cap. Perhaps the younger boys are requiredcto wear them, but did not bring them for the portarit as they would not be wearing them in the portrait.
