This interesting article on current trends of children's fashion appeared in a South African newspaper <1 Beeld May 22 > in 2003. It was written by Alet Rademeyer. The title was, "School uniforms should be more informal, find Technikon - project". This is a translation from the from from Afrikaans bu HBC reader Andre Amtrade.

Schoolwear for primary school children is superfluous, unpractical and the children quickly outgrow them. This is the view of educationalists who are studying this in liaison with the Pretoria Technikon who are researching and developing the study project.

Mr. Ben van Rensburg, the manager of the sentrum, says the findings reveal that people want informal schoolwear now. A pre-exquisite though is that the clothing must be similar (uniform) in order to maintain discipline.

Some suggestions that recommend of what can be done away with are school ties. Other options considered are jeans instead of long trousers and windbreakers instead of jerseys or expensive blazers.

Muted coloured clothes, tracksuits and wrinkle-free, cool material is recommended.

Current complaints of the present uniforms are that short dresses are cold in winter, schoolshoes are unpractical as they can only be used for school and white shirts soil easily.

Van Rensberg says although there is support for more informal wear, the current school dress won't be summarily dismissed. He foresees that the new wear won't change like that of America, where they can wear what they want.

The Minister of Education has recently questioned the suitability of traditional schoolwear. Moreso with the parents whose financial burden can be lessened if a solution is found."
