Individual U.S. School: Unidentified California School (1925)

Figure 1.--We do not know the name of this school, but we do know that it was a California school. We have an image of the first grade class in 1925. The boys wear a mixture kneepants, knickers, and overalls. The portrait is interesting because of the number of oriental children, I think Japanese.

We do not know the name of this school, but we do know that it was a California school. We have an image of the first grade class in 1925. The boys wear a mixture kneepants, knickers, and overalls. The portrait is interesting because of the number of oriental children, I think Japanese. A very large percentage of the American Japanese population in the 1920s was concentrated in California and Hawaii. The reason we think they are Japanese is that this was a school in an obviously rural area. We think that the Chinese were more concentrated in an urban area. As many of the children wear overalls, I believe that this was a school in a rural area. Notice the placement of the children. Many of the Japanese children are in the first row. We wonder just why this was. Was this the position the children took on their own or were they arranged like this. One subject we know little about is how minority treated were treated in California schools. The photograph here suggests to that the Japanese children were well integrated into the school. The level of integration seems to us more prounounced than any where in Europe. These children are also the Japanese that were interned in World War II.
