Children's Wellington Boots: Schoolwear

Figure 1.--The photograph was take of boys playing in their boarding school grounds. Note that some of the boys are wearing wellington boots whilst others are in t-bar sandals. Quite a difference. We wonder why? The photograph looks to have been taken in the 1970s.

Wellies were commonly worn at British boarding schools. In fact the most common fooitwear associated with Briritish schools are Wellies and school sandals along with plimsols for gym. As far as we know their use was most common at British schools, but hopefully our readers will inform us of use in other countries. An important factor of course is the British climate. By far the most widely worn color was the black wellie. There are outside activities at boarding schools in all sorts of weather and wellies were perfect for tromping around in the rain or muddy grounds. The photograph was take of boys playing in their boarding school grounds. Note that some of the boys are wearing wellington boots whilst others are in t-bar sandals. Quite a difference. We wonder why? Surely those with the boots on must have had sweaty feet if they had been running around like the boys in sandals. Perhaps they had been wading into a pond or stream in the school grounds whilst the others in sandals either didn't want to it were against the school rules!
