Domestic Scene (United States, about 1910)

Figure 1.--HGC has no information as to the provinance of this photograph. Based on the women's dresses, we would date it to about 1910. The girl's short hair shows that you can not assume that all children with short hair are boys.

Unfortunately HGC has no nformation as to the provinance of this photograph. We have no idea who the individuals are in the photograph. We do not even know if this was really a family snapshot or some kind of posed image. Based on the women's dresses, we would date it to about 1910. The girl's short hair shows that you can not assum that all children with short hair are boys.

A reader writes, "I noticed the picture here on the Historical Girls' Clothing web-site. The description accompanying the photograph states that the child is a girl. However, I noticed, that he or she seems to be holding a "boy's cap in his or her left hand. Further, the child appears dejected or unhappy about the situation. Is it possible that the child is a boy? I know that much may be read into photographs. My interpretation was of a boy with three elder female family members possible Sisters, Cousins or Aunts. He may have not yet been breeched or perhaps for some, unknown, reason has been reverted to feminine attire or otherwise required to wear a dress, etc..."

Well the individuals in the photograph here are unidentified. We have no wat of being sure who is who. There certainly are lots of images on HBC if boys wearung dresses. Unfortunately we have no background information about this photograph. There are also many images of girls with short hair. This child is just too old for a boy still to be wearing dressess. Thus without some actual information we can only assume the child is a girl. It is possible that it is some kind of posed joke scene, but we have no way of knowing at this time.
