Blouses: Chronology--Late 19th Century Catalogs

Figure 1.--Sears in 1897 adverized a wide selection of blouces, which, it also called waists. Some like this one were quite plain. Others were fancy Dauntleroy blouses. Notice how this boy, even with a rather palin blouse, is pictured with long hair.

Catalog advertisements provide a great deal of useful information about the blouses worn by boys in the late 19th century. They had details that are not available by simply studying available photograpic evidence. Information about materials, colors, and ages can be gleaned from studying these catalogs.

Sears, 1897

The 1897 Sears catalog provies information on boys blouses or shirt waists for boys from 4 to 14. Some styles were available from 4 to 14, but fancier styles only from 4-8 or 4-12. Seas offers both plain and fancy Fauntleroy styles in white and a variety of colors.
