Lace Collar Trends: Complications

boys lace collars
Figure 1.--We know nothing about this boy, except that he was American from Chicago. We would ciuess his portrait was taken around the tutn of the 20th century. He wears a gingham blouse, but with an elaborate ruffled and cut-out lace collar.

Often it is not possible or difficult to tell from a photograph what type of lace collar we are dealing with. Here the major problem is decidedig if a collar is actually sewn on to the blouse. This is further complicated by the fact that many mothers did their own sewing. Some collars may have been sewn on with a few simple stitches, rather like pin-on lace collars. Here we will archive some lace collars we are not sure about. Perhaps reads will hace some insights.

Image 1

We know nothing about this boy, except that he was American from Chicago (figure 1). He looks to be about 2-3 years old. We would guess his portrait was taken around the tutn of the 20th century. He wears a gingham blouse, but with an elaborate ruffled and cut-out lace collar. Our guess is that mother bought or sewed the ginham blouse and then added on the elaborate ruffled lace collar. Note the matching wrist trim.
