Ameruican Kilt Suits: Individual Outfits

Figure 1.--These two brothers were photographed in Chicago, probably in the 1880s. Note the yonger boy wears a skirt while the older boy wears a kilted garment with a front pannel. Otherwise their outfits are identical. HBC is unsure if their mother chose the two skirted garments to reflect the older boy's age or if the difference is random. Note that the younger boy also has a hairbow.

These two brothers were photographed in Chicago, probably in the 1880s. Note the yuonger boy wears a skirt while the older boy wears a kilted garment with a front pannel. Clearly their mother liked to dress the boys alike. Other than the difference in the kilt skirts, their outfits are identical. HBC is unsure if their mother chose the two skirted garments to reflect the older boy's age or if the difference is random. Note that the younger boy also has a hairbow.

Chronology

This photograph was undated. The small collar bows suggests that it may be an early 1880s image. Also the bloused kilt suit tops was more typical of the 1880s than the 1890s.

Identity

The boys are unidentified. The ringlet curls, especially two boys in ringlets (double the work), suggest that the family was aflluent. We note, however, that the ringlets are not as well done as is the case for some of these old photographs.

Age

The boys look to be about 4 and 7 years old.

Location

The portrait studio when the boys were photographed was in Chicago, Illinois.

Outfit

Lace collars

The boys wear identical lace pin on collars. There is no matching lace trim on the sleeve cuffs.

Bows

the boys wear small bows, mote typical pf the 1870s than the 1880s.

Jacket

The jackets are more like a blouses than the suit coats with lapels that were pften work with kilt suits. Note how the jacket is bloused at the waist. The jacket and kilt shirt are a dark color, but there is no indication as to what color. The material is a plain material without pattern.

Kilt

Note the yonger boy wears a skirt while the older boy wears a kilted garment with a front pannel. Otherwise their outfits are identical. HBC is unsure if their mother chose the two skirted garments to reflect the older boy's age or if the difference is random. Both kilt skirts reach well below the knees. Given the bloused jackets the boys are probably wearing bodice kilts.

Stockings

Both boys wear long black stockings.

Footwear

Both boys wear button shoes.

Hair Styles

Both boys wear ringlet curls, although done differently. This may relate to differences in their hair as theor outfits are so similar. Note that the younger boy also has a hairbow. It is a little indistinct. If it is not a hairbow that the tp of his hair is styalized in some manner.
