Boys'Tunics: Early 20th Century--Chronology

Figure 1.--This American boy is 3 1/2 years old. He had his portrait taken in 1924. We note very few boys wearing tunics after the mid-1920s.

Tunics in the early 20th Century were similar to those worn in the 1890s. They were very popular in the 1900s and the 1910s. Tunic outfits like the one seen here (figure 1) as well as other styles were very popular for younger boys in the 1900s. We also commonly see them in the 1910s, perhsaps not quite so commonly. After World War I (1914-18), however, they quickly disappeared from the fashion scene. We note them in the early 1920s, bith actual tunics and tunic influence garments. We note very few examples of tunics by the late 1920s as a variety of other styles appeared for younger boys. This precise transition is a little difficult to follow as so many period snapshots are undated. The portrait here of an American a boy in 1924 wearing a tunic is one of the lates that we have.

The 1900s

Tunics in the early-20th Century were similar to those worn in the 1890s only they were much more common. Tunic suits as well as other styles were very popular for younger boys in the 1900s. hey were especially popular in America. We even see President Roosevelt's younger son wearing them. Tunic suits were often worn with bloomer knickers.

The 1910s

Tunic suits continued to be very popular in the 1910s. A good example is 5-year old Hewett Lindsley, an American boy in 1910. We also commonly see them in the 1910s, perhaps not quite so commonly. After World War I (1914-18).

The 1920s

We note them in the early 1920s, both actual tunics and tunic influence garments. We see more boys wearing straight-leg knee poants rather than bloomer knickes. We note very few examples of tunics by the late 1920s as a variety of other styles appeared for younger boys. Tunic outfits like the one seen here (figure 1), began to rapidly decline in popularity after the early 20s. They quickly disappeared from the fashion scene. This precise transition is a little difficult to follow as so many period snapshots are undated. The portrait here of an American a boy in 1924 wearing a tunic is one of the lates that we have.
