Sailor Suits: Gender Chronology--the 1900s

Figure 1.--We note a German girl in 1909 wearing a sailor suit which except for the skirt was the same style that a boy might have worn. Notice her wonderful straw hat which had a bow rather than a streamer. Image coutesy of Albumn1900.

We note the British rotal family in the 1900s wearing identical middy blouses. Many images show Princess Mary weaing smocks while her brothers wear sailor suits. She also wore sailor outfits. We note many images of girls wearing sailor suits precisely like their brothers, only skirts rather than trousers. The hats and even some caps as well as the middy blouses were identical.

1900

We note an American girl in 1900 wearing what looks like a light-colored sailor dress. It was worn as a summer dress. Her brothers all wear sailor suits, but her sisters wear dresses without sailor styling. These American children all wear black long stockings with their sailor outfit. Notice that the German girl here wears three-quarter socks.

1901

Many images show Princess Mary weaing smocks while her brothers wear sailor suits. She also wore sailor outfits. An image shows Queen Victoria with Princess Mary wearing the same middy blouses as her brothers, but with skirts rather than trousers. I do not have the date of these images, but as the Princess looks to be 3-4 yers old, it would have been 1900 or 1901. The portraits can not be latter than 1901 as the Queen fied in that year.

1905

Girls not only wore sailors suits, but also dresses with sailor styling. We note two American girls wearing dresses with sailor syling. The imag is undated, but we date it at about 1905.

1909

We note a German girl in 1909 wearing a sailor suit which except for the skirt was the same style that a boy might have worn (figure 1). The girl wears a simple middy blouse with very traditional styling. Note that the girl here has a collar with four rather than more traditional three stripes. We note a German family also in 1909. All the children (exceptfor the youngest and older teenagers) wear sailor suits. They have matching suits, the boys with kneepants and the girls with skirts.
