We have acquired two images of Belgian boys wearing sailor suits in 1913, the year before World War I began. Both are younger boys wearing white summer suits. One boy wears striped socks with high-top shoes. Another boy wears white kneesocks with patent leather strap shoes.
We have a portrait of one family taken in 1913, one year before the German invasion and
another portrait 4 years later in 1917. The family consist of the parents and two children. In both instances the boys wears a white short pants sailor suit with traditional detailing. While his sailor suit does not change, his hair style does. His sisters wears a white dress with hairbows and or a hair band. Their father wears a white wing collared shirt in one portrait. Their mother wears a white blouse and skirt.
This Belgian boy looks to be about 4-5 years old. He was photographed in a white sailor suit in 1913. The suit has traditional styling, although multiple strip detailing rather than the more common three stripes. I'm not sure what color the detailing is, but could be light blue or even red. He does not wear a dickey and he had a large white bow rather than a more traditional black scarfe. He appears to be wearing a jacket affair rather than a middly blouse which was common at the ime. His has button-on short pamts or kneepants which he wears with white kneesocks and black patent leather strap shoes. His har is long, but well above shoulder length.
