Joseph Mazzello: Film Career

Figure 1.--This image shows Joseph in "The Cure" (199?). He effectively plays a boy having difficultly growing up without his dad.

Joseph is sometimes credited as Joe. He has had an incredible impressive career as a child star, appearing in major films with some of the most important Hollywwid stars and directors. He has appeared in both blockbusters like "Jurasic Park" (1993) and more sensitive films like "Shawdowlands" (1993) in the same year. He was especially impressive in ""Radio Flyer" (1992). We do not know a lot about Joseph's film career. One reader tells us that he was one of the best child actors from the 1990s. He played with Seth Mummy in "Three Wishes" starring Patrick Swayze. There was a strange plot to "The Cure" (199?). He has a life-threatening illness. He bonds with an older boy and they do on a trip together to find a cure. A film set in the mid-1950s with a surprising ending. Joseph gave an incredible performance alongside Elijah Wood in "Radio Flyer". Joseph was about 7-years old at the time the film began shooting. In the film, his single mother's boyfriend physically abused him. A very heavy role for an 7-year old! A very unusual ending too. You might remember him as the chatty kid in "Jurassic Park". Another great film he starred in was "Simon Birch". The setting being in the mid-50s has good examples of period clothing. He has appeared with some of the biggest Hollywood stars. He also caught the eye if Steven Spielberg who altered ages of the children in "Jurassic Park" so Joseph could play Tim. Joseph was was going to play Jack in the Peter Pan adaptation "Hook", but was not big enough. So Spielberg changed the script so Joseph could play Tim. His work with Speilberg on "Jurasic Park" interested him in directing.

Wide Range

He has had an incredible impressive career as a child star, appearing in major films with some of the most important Hollywwid stars and directors. He has appeared in both blockbusters like "Jurasic Park" (1993) and more sensitive films like "Shawdowlands" (1993) in the same year.

Individual Films

We do not know a lot about Joseph's film career, but have begun to collect some information. One reader tells us that he was one of the best child actors from the 1990s. He has appeared with some of the biggest Hollywood stars.

Internal Affairs (1990)

Radio Flyer (1992)

Josephe was especially impressive in ""Radio Flyer" (1992). Joseph gave an incredible performance alongside Elijah Wood in "Radio Flyer". Joseph was about 7-years old at the time the film began shooting. In the film, his single mother's boyfriend physically abused him. A fan writes, "He played a very difficult role in "Radio Flyer" exceptionally well and was well-paired with Elijah Wood, who played his older brother."

Jurasic Park (1993)

You might remember him as the chatty kid in "Jurassic Park". He caught the eye if Steven Spielberg who altered ages of the children in "Jurassic Park" so Joseph could play Tim. His work with Speilberg on "Jurasic Park" interested him in directing.

Shadowlands (199?)

Joseph really held his own as a youngster who has lost a father, has to move to England where his mother marries an English professor, C.S. Lewis, played by Anthony Hopkins. The mother (Debra Winger) dies of Cancer and the scene near the end where both Joseph and His new step-father break down in grief together is an example of outstanding emotional acting. Joseph arrives in American clothes, but switches to typical English schoolboy shorts and sweater, etc. soon after. C.S. Lewis is of course the author of the classic children's stories, The Chronicles of Narnia.

A Father for Charlie (199?)

Joseph was also was outstanding in the TV film "A Father for Charlie". I think his small stature and late-changing voice allowed him to play younger than his age roles.

High Lonesome (1994)

The River Wild (1994)

Three Wishes (1995)

Joseph played with Seth Mumy in "Three Wishes" starring Patrick Swayze. "Three Wishes" is a 1995 film directed by Martha Coolidge. Jane Holman is a military wife during the 1950s. Her husband is lost and probably dead in Korea. The movie begins with a car ride. Jane is in the car with her two boys, Tom and Gunny. Distracted by the kids she hits a drifter, Jack McCloud. Jack's leg is broken. Even so the police give him a hard time. Feeling responsible, she offers to allow Jack invites Jack and his dog Betty Jane to stay at her home until his leg has mended. The neighbors are suspicious. There is something different about Jack played by Patrick Swayze.

The Cure (1995)

There was a strange plot to "The Cure" (199?). He has a life-threatening illness. He bonds with an older boy and they do on a trip together to find a cure. A film set in the mid-1950s with a surprising ending. A very heavy role for an 7-year old! A very unusual ending too. A fan writes, "He was also very good in (and out acted Brad Renfro) in 'The Cure'."
