Les Choristes: Music

Figure 1.-- This still shows a concert of the boys for the board of govenors of the reformatory. The boys have changed into white shirts for the performance in the town square. Noter the suspenders. The music in this film is particularly beautiful and moving.

The music in the film is stunning. The film is a competently told story of an inspirational teacher. There are several similar films. What makes this film rise above the other movies in this genre is the music. Viewers will take the haunting music with them and it lingers in the memory in a way that few film music tracts do. The choral pieces were sung by Les Petits Chanteurs de Saint-Marc. They are simply brilliant and Jean-Baptiste Maunier's solos highlight the level of performance that choristers can achieve with competent training. Hopefully HBC readers will be able to tell us more about the music. As a result of the film and resulting publicity, the choir sold a very large number of CDs. A reader tells us, "Les Petits Chanteurs de St Marc really did good job and notably are a mixed children's choir, not a boys choir. After the film the choir received lots of attention and went on tour in France, Canada and Japan. There is a beautiful DVD from a concert in Paris where they sing the songs from the film and some additional ones. It's just wonderful."
