Alphabetical Movie Listings: "Ci-Cl"

Figure 1.-- "Cinderella Man" is a well made film directed by Ron Howard. It received critical comment, but had a dissapointing success at the boxoffice. The film is set in New Jersey/New York during the Great Depression from 1928 to 1939. In the film Connor Price plays his eldest son Jay. He is between 10 and 12. Actually the boys' costuming is not historically correct. At least some if not most of the boys would have been wearing knickers at the time.

Ciao Professore - (Italy, 1993?)

A teacher finds himself in a rural school. The children have no interest in their studies and are planning careers as gangsters.

Cimarron - (US, 1960)

One of the rare Westerns with some interesting boy costuming. Cimarron is a free Western spirit who has difficulty with his wife's desire to civilize him. I have a note indicating a velvet suit, but that might be the bride's little brother. Their son, Cedric?, is often smartly dressed by his demanding wife. If I remember right the boy wears a smock or kilt suit with a lace collar when he is about 4 or 5. One of the more exacting outfits I've seen in an American movie. Later at about 12 years of age the boy wears knickers.

Cinderella Liberty - (US, 1973)

A sailor finds a ready-made family and love in a barroom hustler and her son.

Cinderlla Man - (US, 2005)

"Cinderella Man" is a well made film directed by Ron Howard. It received critical comment, but had a dissapointing success at the boxoffice. I'm not sure just why. It is the story of boxer Joe Braddock played by Russell Crowe. The film bills Braddock as the "common man" who became one of the most surprising sports legends in history. The film is set in New Jersey/New York during the Great Depression from 1928 to 1939. In the film Connor Price plays his eldest son Jay. He is between 10 and 12. An English reader writes, "Jay in the film wears long trousers throughout as do the other boys in the film. If that film had been set in England then Jay would have been wearing shorts as was the custom over here." Actually the boys' costuming is not historically correct. At least some if not most of the boys would have been wearing knickers at the time.

Cinema Paradiso - (Italy, 1989?)

Another sweetly nostalgic European (Sicily) coming of age drama. This is one of the Italian movie classics. A young boy named Toto (Salvatore Cascio), who is also an altar boy, learns about life while threading the projector from an endearing old projectionist. The film portrays the importance of movies in postwar, provincial Italy. In this village there is a real love of film. The movie includes the well-established staples for coming of age movies, including masturbating boys. The real charm of the movie is little Toto who has an absolutely disarming smile which alone makes this film worth seeing. Toto appears for about half the film and an endearing little chap, about 8 or so. He always wears shorts, except for his first communion suit. At the beginning of the film he appears in a school smock, but does not wear it in a later school scene. Some older boys, however, are wearing smocks--although you have to look carefully. In one scene he starts a fire with movie film and mummy smacks him about. Toto's acting was really realistic during this scene. Lots of boys in the movie scenes are wearing shorts. In the later half of the movie Toto as an older teen wears longs, although once during the summer he appears to wear knickers. On quite old heavy-set friend wears rather short shorts.

(A) Circle of Children - (US, 1977)

A bored housewife volunteers to work with emotionally disturbed children.

Circus Boys on the Flying Trapeze

Circus Days - (US, 1923)

Jackie Coogan.

Citizen Kane - (US, 1941)

Very brief scene of Kane as a boy in a nice Fauntleroy suit at the very beginning of the movie. The whole movie is a film classic, but that was the only part of interest. Orson Wells made the film as a thinly veiled biography as William Randolf Herst, the newspaper magnate. In many ways, however, the film was autobiographical. Herst, for example, never lost his mother at an early age. Wells did. I'll have to look into Wells' early age to see if there was anything interesting. I wonder if he was dressed in Fauntleroy suits. Interestingly, Wells' next film ("The Magnificent Ambersons") had the main character in even more sissy outfits and long ringlet curls.

(The) City and the Dogs - (Peru, 1985)

A story set in a Peruvian military academy. Based on a book by Mario Vargas Llosa.

City on Fire - (US, 1979)

Basically uninteresting movie. Several boys are involved and some wear American-style leisure shorts.

Clan of the Cave Bear -

Joey Cramer.

Clara's Heart - (US, 1988)

A Jamaican house keeper cheers a 13-year-old whose life is crumbling under the weight of his parent's divorce.

Class - (US, 199?)

American prep school uniforms are depicted. Rob Lowe dresses up as a girl. The title may be "Class Act".

Class Act - (US, 1992)

Two students swap identities upon transferring to a new school.

Claudine - (US, 1974)

Romance blossoms between a mother of six and a garbage collector.

Claws - (South Africa, 1985)

I am guessing that it is a South African film as it was shot at Cedarberg, but it could be a British production. It unfortunately was a mild horror movie, or perhaps a suspense film would be a better description. The particular monster that causes all the suspense is a South African lynx, hardly a typical film monster. In fact the lynx is beautiful cat. Fair enough it would be frightening for a small boy. The film is notable for the central role played by the boy, Loew? (Jason Roberts) and his dog, Aziz. He is quite an engaging boy with a nice accent. He is a very effective little actor. His personality is nicely developed as he talks to himself. His father is hurt and he is left alone on the family farm. He wears overalls, shorts (long ones), and long pants with sandals.

(La) Classe de Neige (France, 1998)

(The) Client - (US, 1994)

Suspenseful murder mystery where Mark, an 11-year old boy (Brad Renfro) observes a murder and the mob seeks to silence him. No interesting costuming, but it is an effective thriller. Brad is a non-professional and probably because of that is terrific in his part--a tough but innocent boy. No interesting clothes.

Clifford (US, 1994)

A dreadful attempt at comedy. It might have worked if the had used a real boy. Instead, the adult comedian Martin Short, plays a devilish 10-year old. The costuming is rather good, but all lost on an adult Cliford. He appears in cap, tie, blazer, and shorts. At first it is a school-boy type blue blazer and khaki shorts, later a red Eton jacket and grey shorts.

Climb an Angry Mountain (US, 1972)

A sheriff tracks an escaped convict who kidnapped his son.

Cloak and Dagger - (US, 1984 or 85)

Made for TV movie about a boy's overly fertile imagination. Spies try to kill a boy about 11 years old who knows to much. The boy is very nicely played by Henry Thomas. Why is it that American boys almost never wear shorts in movies and on TV?

Close Encounters of the Third Kind - (US, 1977)

Science fiction adventure about the encounter of two Americans with UFOs. A boy has a small part.

(The) Clown - (US, 1953)

An 11-year old boy (Tim Considine) inspires in has-been comedian father to succeed in a final chance for a comeback. "The Clown" is basically a re-make of "The Champ", with a show-biz performer, Red Skelton, in place of prizefighter Wallace Beery. Tim Considine wore a striped T-shirt and blue jeans for much of the film, and longs for other scenes. Not a bad film, though some watchers will find Red Skelton's performance a bit old fashioned, and the film is very much a tear jerker.

(A) Closely Watched Trains - (Czechoslovakia, 1966)

During World War II, a young Czech youth who has but one interest--girls, aides in blowing up a German munitions train and loses his life as a hero.

Cluny Brown - (?, 1946)

Comedy set around the turbulent career of a plummer's niece and a Czech war veteran in England during World war II. Billy Chapin
