The Lucky Star (United States/Canada, 1980)

Figure 1.--.

A 13-year old Jewish Dutch boy fantasizes about the German soldiers moving toward his town. A technically well made movie, but the premise is ridiculous. The main character and his friend wear short pants suits and knee socks at the beginning of the movie. In one scene the boys sneak off to a movie. You see them watching a western, sitting with their knees up to their chins. The kinickers suit was brown. The main actor also wears knickers as well as other suits. He dreams of being a cowbow as he has seen in films. He is a teenager, who is being harboured or hidden by a woman who protects him from the Nazis. She meets him along a typical Dutch/Belgium road lined by trees. She was driving a large black 4-door car. It resembled the large Mercedes that Hitler and the NAZI-bigwigs were driven in. There was a girl about the same age as the boy, about 13-14 years old, that he meets and likes. The NAZIs have occupied the town. The lady takes the boy in and uses him as her hired help on the her small farm. He seems to enjoy this farm setting, but due to his growing fantasy he takes a NAZI captive in the small barn on the woman's property when he comes to check up on things. This causes much trouble for him and in the end the boy is shot by the NAZIs in the middle of the nearby small town while pretending to be a cowboy like he has seen in the movie. He drew a toy gun on a German soldier who had a rifle and shot him, thinking the gun in the boy's hand is real. This has aired many times on "The Family Channel" and also on "Bravo Arts Network".

Filmology

Setting

The film is set in the occupied Netherlanmds during World War II.

Cast

Brett Marx (Jimmy Feldman in the "Bad News Bears" films) stars as 13 year old David, who lives with his parents in Amsterdam at the time of the 1940 NAZI invasion. Brett Marx was born in Los Angeles on December 16, 1964. Louise Fletcher superbly plays the fram lady who takes in David.

Plot

A 13-year old Jewish Dutch boy fantasizes about the German soldiers moving toward his town. The main character dreams of being a cowbow as he has seen in films. David loves American cowboy films, the wild West, and guns. Not long after his Bar Mitzvah, he takes money from the cash register of his parents' shop to buy a priceless Colt 45 from an antique dealer. He returns home just in time to see the NAZIs take his parents away. He would have of course been taken as well if he had been with them. David flees Amsterdam, tearing off the yellow star from his jacket. He ends up in the southern Netherlands farm country, where he is taken in by a widowed farm woman. She protects him from the NAZIs. She meets him along a typical Dutch/Belgium road lined by trees. She was driving a large black 4-door car. It resembled the large Mercedes that Hitler and the NAZI-bigwigs were driven in.

David thrives on farm life; tending the horses and cattle let him imagine that he's a cowboy in the Old West. This fantasy is disturbed when the NAZIs occupy the nearest town and demand that the mayor assist and deportation of all Jews in the area. The mayor, a friend of the woman who has taken in David is caught in a dilemma. He fears for his life if he doesn't cooperate with the NAZIs, but he doesn't want to turn David over to the Germans, because his woman friend protects and loves the boy. Finally, the mayor decided to betray David.

There was a girl about the same age as the boy, about 13-14 years old, that he meets and likes. Due to his growing fantasy he takes a NAZI captive in the small barn on the woman's property when he comes to check up on things. Too late, for David, armed with his Colt 45, confronts the NAZIs alone, and is shot to death by the Germans. In this sad ending, the farm woman has lost someone she had come to love, and the mayor lost the affection of the woman and gained nothing from his act of cowardice.

Costuming

The main, Gavid, character and his friend wear short pants suits and knee socks at the beginning of the movie knee socks and a flat cap and rather long shorts in another. In one scene the boys sneak off to a movie. You see them watching a western, sitting with their knees up to their chins. He also wears knickers. The kinickers suit was brown. At the farm he wears a long sleeved work shirt and long pants. A few of the other boys also wear shorts or short pants suits.

Assessment

A very fine technically that isn't often shown. The premise, however, is ridiculous. I never understand why as dramatic as the real circumstances were that Hollywood tries to create add unrealistic touches.
