We do not know a great deal about South African movies. We note a movie about a White and a Black boy. We are not sure where it was made, but we are guessing that it may be from or about South Africa. Here we have two different opinions. Unfortunately we have not seen either film so can't be positive. Perhaps the difference is different release titles.

A HBC reader tells us that the film is "éLollipop" with Muntu Ndebele and Norman Knox as Tsepo and Jannie. The film was released in 1976. The costuming does look like the mid-70s. The movie is about two South African boys and their dog, Sugarball. It is a touching film about the relationship between a Black and White boy at a time thay South Africa had a oloicy of Aparthaid and the country was locked in a bitter racual stryggle. Authorities almost banned it, but eventually allowed it to be shown. Abroad it became a cult classic. The film was shot in Lesotho and New York. I'm not sure if it was also shot in South Africa. There was a sequel--"Where are Tsepo and Jannie?".

Another reader tells us, "The above photo is taken from a South African film called "A Dry White Summer" staring Donald Sutherland. It centres on apartheid and what happens to a white family who become involved in protecting the family of their garden's family."
