Musical Stage Productions: Music and Dance

Figure 1.--Here two children are doibg a dance routein in a musical. We are not sure what play is being produced here.

Some plays involve much more than straight drama. The leading examples here are musicals and light opera. These plays commonly involve orcesstras, songs, and dance routeins. The orchestras are of varying size, depending on the production. Some school or community productions might use recirded instrumentation, but almost always the musical parts are sung by the actors. Today the best examples are the Americam musicals, but they were proceeded by the British light operas. Here the most famous are the Gilbert and Sullivan productions. There are roles for children in many of these plays. Some plays have been produced as both regular plays and musicals. An example here is "Auntie Mame" the play which was later done as "Mame" the musical.
