Abenteuer 1900: Leben im Gutshaus 1900--Costuming

Figure 1.-- We notice a German TV progrm recreating life in a old 1900 house. Here are the children in the program. German readers tells us that the program was wonderful. We believe that the producers could have taken more care with the costuming.

I haven't seen the program and can't fully comment on the accuracy of the costuming. The sailor suits two of the boys wear, however, do not seem quite right. We believe that there would have been a cap tally. More importantly, the way their middy blouses are tucked into their trousers does not look right to us. American boys would have worn blouses without tails to tuck in. Rathers American boys wore blouses that blouced out over the top of their trousers. A drawstring maintained the blousing affect. This is discussed on the blouse construction page. We are less sure about Austrian and Germany boys, but we have noted German boys wearing middky blouses that bloused iver the top of their trousers. One example is an Austrian Budapest family at about the same time. Another good example is an unidentified German family. Some of the other outfits worn by the older boys seem more correct. the older brothers wore dufferent styles of suits. We wonder, however, if all the other boys would have worn long trousers.

Younger Boys: Sailor Suits

The sailor suits two of the boys wear, however, do not seem quite right. We believe that there would have been a cap tally. Very rarely have I noted Germany boys wearing sailor caps and hats without the tallies, normally with the name of a ship or location. It is difficult to tell if the boys are wearing kneepants or knickers. We think kneepants were the most likely. They wear grey stockings. Probably black would have been more likely.

Older Boys: Suits

Some of the other outfits worn by the older boys seem more correct. Here we see their caps, suits, and coats. We are unsure about the caps. The peaked military caps were worn at the time. We are less sure about the mix of these caps and the suits, especially with the older boy. We can not see the details of the jackets. The overcoats seem reasonably correct. the older brothers wore dufferent styles of suits. We wonder, however, if all the other boys would have worn long trousers.
