Boy Choir Costumes in Other Countries

Figure 1.--.

HBC has obtained scattered details on choirs in several other countries. There isn't enough information available yet to make a separate page on these countries.

Haiti

Les Petits Chanteurs de Sainte Trinete Cathedral

The Haitian Boy's Choir visits the Washington area regularly, primarily because of an on going relationship with St. Patrick's Episcopal Church. It is formed from the Ecole Sainte Trinite, presumably in Port-au-Prince. The school educates poor children. More than half of their parents are uneducated. I have no information on the uniform, but I did see a picture during the summer of a boy in short pants. I went to see a November concert at St. Patricks and they were all wearing grey longs.

Hong Kong

Hong Kong Choir

They participated with the Newark Boys Chorus School at a Japanese performance in 1990. For the performance they wore traditional outfits, colorful satiny suits with long pants. The choir was composed of both boys and girls, but mostly girls.

Latvia

Latvia is one of the three Baltic republics seized by Stalin after the Non-Agression Pact with Hitler and then seized by Hitler when he invaded the Soviet Union. After "loberation" in 1944, Latvia became a Soviet Republic. Large number of Latvian nationals were deported and many Russians moved into Latvia.

Riga Cathedral Choir

The boys in a 1995 appearance wore tuxedo-likee outfits with blue bow ties with long trousers.

Russia

Lenningrad Boy Choir

Pictured on a 1987 PBS special about visiting story tellers from the United States. They wore dark suits.

Leningrad Radio and Television Children's Choir

Sings both Russian and Westen works.

Taiwan

Rong-Shing Children's Choir of Taapei

This group visited Washington in 1989, but I couldn't get tickets. It includes both boys and girls 5 to 15 years old. The younger boys wear shorts (some wear suspender shorts) and white knee socks. I'm not sure what the older boys wear. One reviewer wrote, "it's hard to look beyond the cuteness factor, especially when all 24 members are bedecked in matching outfits of turquoise and white."
