Figure 1.--Here we have a cabinet card portrait of an American boy. There is information on the back, 7 years old Americab boy taken during the summer of 1896. We even have his name. The writing is difficult to read, but looks something like Willie Schriner. Willie is short for William. The last mame is more difficult to read. He wers a Fauntleroy blouse which mother no doubt lovingly selected with knee pants and long stockings. As it is summer he does not wear a jacket. The portrait was taken in Medill's Studio in La Salle, Illinois. Notice the whicker chair. Whicker becomes common in portraits during the mid-1890s, useful in dating undated portraits. Natural whicker was common in the 1890s and white whicker after the-turn-of-the century. Here we have white whicker in 1896.
