Lancashire Towns: Wigan

Figure 1.-- The photograph here shows a group of children. I thought at first the children were on their way hime from school and headed for the sweet shop. The policeman might have been on duty to see the children got safely across the road. But I don't see any books. If it was after school surely their would be books and scatchels. Perhaps the photographer got everyone to line up by the sweet shop for the picture. The policeman might also have been included to demonstrate the trust the community had for the police.

There are of course a number of towns in Lancashire. A towm is a municipality somewhere between a village and city. A reader has provided us some images from Wigan, a Lancastershire town near Manchester in northwest, England. Wigan is also close to Preston and Liverpool. Towns cloesby include Leigh, St Helens, Bolton, Chorley and Warrington. Like these towns in he Manchester area, Wigan was an important center for manufactire of textiles. The photograph here shows a group of children. He seems to be well liked by the children.
