During the Winter of 1942-43 my mother managed to get some small size skies for me (figure 1). I am wearing another Traininganzug with a yellow
woollen cap. Many of us had those caps, but as I recall I was the only one who had a yellow one. I had canvas gloves. This was a real treat for us. I eventually became a real ski enthusiast. The next winters 1943/44 and 1944/45 I
lived in a village with relatives. There were a lot of skiing possibilities as the village lies on a higher sea level. A second picture shows me there again with my younger cousin and a girlfriend from the neigbourhood. In the strong winters after the war had ended it was again possible to go skiing near Stuttgart. It was in 1950, 15 years old, that I was allowed to attend a holiday week in the Alpes. And in 1951 there was an excursion of all my classmates for skiing, 2 days which were really fine.
