Budapest Brothers: Garments--Military Schools

Figure 1.--Pisti is seen here in 1905 at age 14 in his cadet unifom. His younger brothers wear sailor suits. Notice the large belt buckle that is worn over the jacket.

Some of the boys appear to have attended military school and thus wore cadet uniforms. We know the two youngest boys attended military school, Pisti and Viki. We are not sure about the two younger boys. Pisti is shown in 1903 at age 12 wearing the cadet uniform of a military school. I am not sure when the boys actually enrolled, but 11-12 years is the the likely time. The boys all had short hair cuts, but their heads were not shaved. The uniform included a destinctive cap that was worn before World War I. I am not sure what it was called. It has a rounded decortion at the top with some kind of vertical braid. There is a belt-like cap band and apatent leather brim or peak. His cadet jacket was very simple with little destinctive styling. I am not sure about the color. There is ahigh, military collar and bttoned epaulets. There is also a raised shoulder decoration. The jacket has brass buttons, but is worn without any decorations are badges. The cuffs are trimd in a lighter color, apparently matching the epauletes and shoulder trim. A belt with a large brass buckle is worn over the jacket, but no no the pants. Both Pisti and Viki were old enough to have served in World War I. We do not know, however, what happened to them in the War or, if even if they survived.

The Brothers

Some of the boys appear to have attended military school and thus wore cadet uniforms. We know the two youngest boys attended military school, Pisti and Viki. We are not sure about the two younger boys.

Ages

I am not sure at this time just what age boy attended military school. Pisti is shown in 1903 at age 12 wearing the cadet uniform of a military school. I am not sure when the boys actually enrolled, but 11-12 years is the the likely time.

Figure 2.--Pisti is shown here in 1903 in his cadet uniform and a short hair cut--but not a shaved head.

Hair Cuts

The boys all had short hair cuts, but their heads were not shaved. one photograph shows Pisti weaing a hair style rather like a flat top or some of the modern early 21st century hair stles. This would have been when he had just entered military school. We are not sure if the style was different for the older boys.

Uniforms

Caps

The uniform included a destinctive cap that was worn before World War I. I am not sure what it was called. It has a rounded decortion at the top with some kind of vertical braid. There is a belt-like cap band and apatent leather brim or peak.

Jacket

The cadet jacket was very simple with little destinctive styling.

Belt

A belt with a large brass buckle is worn over the jacket, but no no the pants. We notice that this belt-over style was common in Euope through the 1930s. Boys smetimes wore belts ver sweaters. In France an Belgum, belts were worn over smocks.

Austro-Hungarian Military Schools

Austro-Hungary was a dual monarchy. HBC believes, however, that the Austrian influence was dominate in the Empire and the military. We are unsure to what extent other nationalities could rise in the military--especially the officer corps. Presumably the Hungarians might have a better chance than the other nationalities. We are also unsure just how open military schools were to non-Austrian boys. It is likely, for exmple, that military schools were conducted in the German language. We do not know how many military schools there were and where they were located. Perhaps there were schools for younger boys in Hungary. Certainly the most important schools were located in Austria, presumably Vienna. We can not confirm this, but it a question we hope to persue.

Military Service

Both Pisti and Viki were old enough to have served in World War I. We do not know, however, what happened to them in the War or, if they survived. If they did survice, we preume that theynd their family returned to Austria or perhaps joined their grandparents in Frankfurt.
