Austrian Brothers: Garments--Headwear

Figure 1.--Viki and Villy are seen here in 1903 at ages 4 and 8 years of age. They are dressed in identical sailor suits. Here the boys wear flat topped sailor caps. In other portraits the boys wear wide-brimmed sailor hats. Note the cap bands which read (in German) something like "??hosen Division". The image is courtesy of the MD collection.

Wide-brimmed sailor hats were popular with as younger boys, probably with dresses and without sailor suits. I am not sure what other headwear the boys wore, but we note that as younger boys, they commonly wore sailor head gear. The only headgear that the younger boys are shown in are sailor hats and caps. Several portraits show the boys wearing wide-brimmed sailor hats. There were two styles of sailor hats with different brim withs and crown forms. We also note flat top sailor caps with a cap band. The two boys that entered military schools had cadet caps.

Sailor Headgear

Wide-brimmed sailor hats were popular with as younger boys, probably with dresses and without sailor suits. I am not sure what other headwear the boys wore, but we note that as younger boys, they commonly wore sailor headgear. There does not seem to be any age difference between these two styles of sailor headwear.

Sailor caps

We also note flat top sailor caps with a cap band. Unlike German and English caps, the cap bands do not have the name of a ship--usually a battleship. Note the cap bands which read something like "??hosen Division".

Other Headwear

We do not see any other styles of headwear worn by the boys.

Cadet Caps

The two boys that entered military schools had cadet caps. We do not know the name of the school they attended or even where it was located. We wonder if the Austo-Hungarian Empire had military schools located in other plces than in Austria itself and to what extent the caps and uniforms may have varried.
