Swedish Family Christmas (1950)

Figure 1.--Here we see a photograph of a Swedish family at home for the Christmas holiday. Ther Christmas of course tells us that itis Chrisdtmas. Notice the Swedish flag decorations. It looks like Christmas is being celebrated at the grandparents hous. There are four boys, probably brothers or cousins. The two younger boys wear similar outfits. Curiously one boy has plain suspender shorts while his brother wears H-bar shorts.

Here we see a photograph of a Swedish family at home for the Christmas holiday. Both wear ribbed long stockings, but notice they end at the ankles. We are not sure what kind of socks they are wearing underneath. As was common in Gerrmsany, the boys take off their shoes when they come nsude and wear slippers or just their stockings. The older two boys wear knickers suit. They have pins in their lapels. I think the heavy socks are put on instead of slippers, but were not worn outside. A reader writes, "It is interesting to note that the two boys wearing long stockings seem to have long underwear undereneath. You can see where the underwear legs end at the ankles in the case of both boys. What is rather unusual about this particular instance of long stockings combined with long underwear is the smoothness of the stockings and the tight fit and neat appearance. This means of course that the stockings are very elastic in their knit (undoubtedly cotton) and that the long underwear is also very form-fitting. Our other examples of this phenomenon on HBC show much bulkier underwear. Note the 1931 photo of a German boy with long stockings and long underwear." The full sized image shows that the stockings are ribbed, but rather finely so." A reader tells us, "I think they are probably cotton with a bit of rayon or synthetic yarn since they fit so elastically--even over what I think is long underwear. The length is also revealing. Although the stockings cover the entire leg, you still cannot see the supporter clasps that are clearly attached. You can tell supporters are being worn by the configuration of the stocking top on the left leg of the boy on the right."
